respond to Q & A

o address a math learning disability, explicit instruction is key. Individualized instruction is an intervention that caters to the students specific needs. Frequent progress monitoring is key in this type of intervention. Specific and clear teacher models, visual representations, scaffolding, and the use of manipulatives such as base ten blocks, place value charts, number disks can be used to help during interventions.  Teacher demonstration and guided practice using a model called “I do, we do, you do,” are all interventions I have used with whole class instruction but can be used in smaller group sessions with students who are struggling.

A type of reading disability is dyslexia. Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects your ability to read, spell, write, and speak.  It is a language based disorder that causes a weakness in processing phonological features of words ( fluency, accuracy). The core feature of dyslexia is a problem with word decoding, which in turn impacts spelling performance and the development of reading fluency (M.J. Snowling, 2012).  One intervention to help with dyslexia would be practice with decoding skills, training in letter-sound knowledge, segmenting and blending words, and reading from appropriate texts. Dysgraphia is a type of learning disability that affects writing and fine motor skills (spelling, handwriting, typing, etc). Academic interventions for this disability would be allowing other ways to express themselves through typing or speaking. Physical accommodations such as pencil grips, graph paper, or paper with raised lines can be used to make writing easier.

Field Experience B – Health Specialist/Special Education Teacher Interview

Allocate 5 hours in the field on this field experience.

Teacher candidates will learn of development characteristics from a nurse, physical education teacher, sports coach, or other health specialist at the school and practicing special education teacher. In this block, your field experience must be completed outside of school hours when students are not present.

Contact a health specialist and a special education teacher from secondary grades 6-12 and arrange separate interviews. Speak with your instructor about alternate professionals to interview, if necessary.

Use the following points of discussion to guide your interview:

  1. Discuss characteristics of adolescence.
  2. What characteristics seem to change the most and why?
  3. What characteristics seem to never change?
  4. How does physical development influence the characteristics of adolescence?
  5. How does cognitive development influence the characteristics of adolescence?
  6. How do social and emotional relationships influence the adolescent?
  7. What technologies are used to facilitate adolescent learning?

In 250-500 words, summarize and reflect on your interviews.  Discuss the characteristics of physical and cognitive development during adolescence and the affect it has on the learning process for students. Explain the effect that social and emotional relationships have during adolescence.

Explain how you will use your findings in your future professional practice.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected

This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin.

Document the hours and locations that you spend in the field on your Clinical Field Experience Verification Form.

Submit the Clinical Field Experience Verification Form with the last assignment by the assignment due date. Directions for submitting can be found on the College of Education site in the Student Success Center.

Week 2: Locating and Citing a Scholarly Source (Research Proposal)

Week 2: Locating and Citing a Scholarly Source

Part 1

Please locate a scholarly peer-reviewed journal article that is related to your proposed research topic. This is my research question is: How does childhood homelessness impact their mental health and effect their academic progress.  (Peer-reviewed means experts in the field have assessed if the article is suitable for publication.)This article should have been published within the past 5 years. (1) Briefly summarize the article in a few sentences. What is the article about, specifically?  (2) Why was it important for this article to be published?  (3) What further questions about the subject has this article raised? Minimum of 350 word count.

Include: (1) Citation for your article in the body of your discussion and (2) Reference for your article at the end of your discussion.

****Remember to use the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2019) for the correct formatting of the citation and reference****

Part 2

While it is important that our work be firmly based on the work of many other authors, it is imperative that we cite our sources according to the current APA style guidelines.  Failure to do so is considered plagiarism, which we regard very seriously in the counseling profession.  This week you will begin compiling sources for your research proposal.

This week you will submit a list of at least 5 references that you plan to use for your research proposal.  These references must be related to your chosen research question that you developed in Week 1. They must be scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles from the counseling profession, published within the past five years.  (Peer-reviewed means experts in the field have assessed if the article is suitable for publication.) Examples of non-scholarly sources that would be inappropriate for this assignment include Wikipedia, blog posts (extremely rare exceptions may be made here), PsychCentral, lifestyle magazine articles, and most other internet sources. (For your final reference list that you submit with your research proposal, you may include limited books and book chapters, but for the sake of this current assignment, only use peer-reviewed journal articles).

Submit a list of your references in APA style as you would on the reference page for a research paper.  Use a hanging indent for each reference (first line flush left with the margin and remaining lines indented), double-space all lines,  and alphabetize the list of references using the last names of the first authors.  Be sure to use the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2019) in formatting your references. After each entry you may choose to include a sentence or two summarizing what the article is about and how it might be useful to your study. These short summaries are not required for the current assignment, but they would serve to help you as you continue work on your research proposal throughout this term.

Assessment 1: Graphical Representations

Locate any report or periodical article that contains at least two different graphical representations of data or use one of the supplied articles. Interpret the graphs and present your findings in a brief PowerPoint presentation (6 slides). You may choose to explain the points in your 5-8 minute presentation with a recorded voice-over or include detailed presenter’s notes in the PowerPoint slides.

Business administrators and managers are often called upon to interpret data that analysts have provided to them. This requires an understanding of the data sources (when, where, and how data is collected; formatted or stored; and used), as well as what that data looks like and how it can be summarized. In this first assessment, you are asked to locate any report or periodical article used in a business context of interest to you that contains at least two different graphical representations of data. You will interpret the graphical data representations and present your findings in a brief PowerPoint deck, as if you were presenting during a company meeting.

In this assessment you will learn about the collection, formatting, and use of raw data, as well as graphical and tabular methods for summarizing it. You will also get started with the technology that you will use in this course: Microsoft Excel (including the Data Analysis ToolPak add-in).

Scenario

You are an analyst in a business. You may choose a real or fictional business of interest. Any business that has practical meaning for you is an appropriate choice for this assessment.

You have been given you a report containing some graphs and charts and must interpret and explain two of them at a department meeting.

Your Role

You have been invited to be one of many presenters at a departmental meeting that employees of all levels will attend. You have been allotted 5–8 minutes, and the purpose of your speech is to explain the two charts or tables that your analyst has given you.

Instructions

  1. Select two graphical representations of data, such as pie charts, bar charts, scatter plots and trend lines, or tables.
    • You may use published articles, annual report graphics from publicly traded companies, or any published business report.
    • A list of appropriate articles has been compiled for this assessment. You may select one of the articles from the list in Resources or find your own article that meets the criteria.
    • If you cannot find any published data graphics, you may create them.
  2. Identify the business context, such as an online store, a brick-and-mortar business, year-end review, product kickoff, recently merged or new IPO company, or a family-owned business.
    • This company background information should help explain why the data is relevant.
  3. Interpret your chosen data representation in the context of the business situation. The following are typical questions an analyst would use to interpret the data:
    • What is being measured (the variables)?
    • What are the relationships among the variables?
    • What are the trends in the data?
    • How can the data be applied in the business context?
  4. Create an effective 6-slide PowerPoint presentation that could be presented at a departmental meeting.
    • An effective PowerPoint presentation for this purpose typically includes:
      • 1 title slide, APA formatted.
      • 1 introduction slide explaining the business context.
      • 1 slide for each of the two graphics in your report.
        • You may insert or paste the charts and include an appropriate citation (2 total slides for this portion of the presentation).
        • Explain the meaning of each graphical data representation.
      • 1 conclusion slide in which you explain how the data may affect the business context or how each graph may be applied in your business context to inform decision making.
      • 1 slide with APA-formatted references, including the source of each graph.
  5. Prepare a short speech that presents your analysis so that it is relevant to people of all levels of the company.

Example Assessment: You may use the following to give you an idea of what a Proficient or higher rating on the scoring guide would look like:

Additional Requirements

  • For each bullet point, use concise but complete sentences that are clear, easily understood, and jargon-free. Remember: you will be speaking to people of all levels within the company.
  • Do not include too many bullet points on each slide (a maximum of 3 bullets per slide is a good guideline to follow).
  • Include an APA-formatted references slide at the end of the presentation as well as APA-formatted in-text citations where appropriate.
  • You may use a recorded voice-over of no longer than 5 minutes using Kaltura or detailed speaker’s notes to add necessary details to your presentation. Refer to the Campus tutorial Using Kaltura (linked in MBA Program Resources) as needed.
  • Your written communication should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.

Evaluation

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies through corresponding scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 1: Explain how data management techniques and tools are used to support business decisions.
    • Introduce the business context.
    • Explain how the data can be applied to the business context.
  • Competency 4: Present the results of data analysis in clear and meaningful ways to multiple stakeholders.
    • Interpret, or explain the meaning of, the two different graphical representations of data.
    • Correctly format citations and references using current APA style.
    • Present content clearly, professionally, and logically for the identified audience.

Fit 4

This week we studied nutrition, making healthy food and portion choices, and managing stress effectively.

For your Unit 4 Complete assignment, write a narrative essay (minimum of 1000 words) in which you address and discuss the questions and statements listed below.  Use at least three scholarly sources and remember to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the READ and ATTEND sections in your essay.  Please make sure to cite your sources in APA format.

  • After perusing the information on choosemyplate.gov, describe in detail how your diet compares to the USDA dietary guidelines and explain if you feel as if you would or would not benefit from utilizing the tools designed to evaluate and track the quality of your diet over time with the MyPlate website.
  • In his book, Mindless Eating, Dr. Brian Wansink presents a somewhat different approach to eating.   Based on his research, Dr. Wansink contends that subtle and almost imperceptible cues and prompts in our day contribute to a tendency to overeat.  His research on labels and containers led to the development of the 100-calorie snack packages.  He also advocates for eating with smaller plates and drinking from taller glasses since it tricks our minds into thinking that we ate or drank more than we did.  By better understanding cues that lead us to eat, we can set habits and environments that help us to eat less.  Rather than changing the foods we eat, the method of “mindless eating” focuses on how we can modify our perceptions of food to regulate intake.  Take a closer look at Mindless Eating on the internet to better understand the ideas.  Discuss whether you think this is a novel approach or just another fad diet and explain if you do or do not believe that this mental approach to weight control would help you better regulate your weight.
  • The recent “Stress in America” report from the American Psychological Association provides insights about patterns and trends in stress.  Although sources and consequences of stress are similar for men and women, there are many key differences in how each gender reports and perceives stress.  Visit the StressinAmerca.org website to take a closer look at stress patterns and trends.  Discuss any interesting patterns or relationships you observe for gender, region, or generation.  Then describe and explain if you are or are not surprised that there are gender, age, or generational differences in stress ratings.

Two Ways of Seeing a River

Discussion 6 – Two Ways of Seeing a River

Purpose

In Lessons 3, 4, and 5 we investigated some elements that will be important to your rough draft and final paper. This discussion is designed to allow us to recognize how a famous American writer, over 100 years ago, used these elements in a compare and contrast essay. Maybe you will gain some ideas or inspiration from his writing.

Instructions

There are two parts to this discussion.

  1. By Friday you will make an initial post to the discussion based on the prompt given below. Note: You will not see the submissions of your classmates until you have posted to the discussion.
  2. By Sunday you will reply to one (1) of your classmates’ posts.

Both of these elements are graded. Answer everything in complete sentences.

Part 1: Your Initial Post (due Friday)

In your initial discussion post, answer only one (1) of the following questions, based on Reading 6—Two ways of seeing a river.  Write 4-8 sentences, using one direct quotation from the reading. The direct quotation should be less than 25% of your answer.  Direct quotations are always enclosed in quotation marks.

Do not answer all four of these.  Answer only one.

At the top of your post, indicate whether you answered number 1, 2, 3, or 4.

  1. What are the two subjects being compared and at what point in the essay do you first understand what these two subjects are (explain)? (Do not answer by only re-writing the title—that’s not good enough, because it only hints that there are “two ways,” but it doesn’t indicate what these two ways are.)
  2. What is the thesis? In other words, what is the central assertion that Twain makes throughout the essay? See the page Writing a Thesis Statement from Lesson 5.
  3. Describe one observation that Twain makes which goes beyond the obvious to offer insights which the reader may have never considered before?  See the page Going Beyond the Obvious from Lesson 4.
  4. How does Twain use the concluding paragraph (3) to extend his ideas beyond a summary, to give the reader something more to think about? See the page Writing Conclusions from Lesson 3.

module 2 discussion 1

One of the great things about MBA classes in the knowledge that is already in each class. Each students bring a unique set of experiences and understanding. Often you can learn as much from each other as you can from the instructor. You can also talk about what does or does not work and bring up practical applications or adaptations of the things that we discuss in the course. This is somewhat more difficult in an online environment. In order try to replicate some of this discussion learning, we will be using discuss boards for the course. Each week I will post an assignment or prompt, and you are expected to ask a thoughtful question or post a thoughtful response each week. Then you need to respond to a few of your classmates posts, and also reply to any who respond to yours during the second half of the week. I believe that this is a where you can be really engaged in the course and learn from each other.
