Everyone has seen the rebates that are offered when buying something new.  It is never easy to get your rebate, as it is required to fill out paperwork, submit forms and the process can take a long time.  However, it is money that retailers are willing to give up just to get one to buy their products.  The Great Rebate Runaround is a prime example of how these rebates can cause confusion but also help a company increase their bottom line.

Customized Pricing

According to Krishna, Briesch, Lehmann, and Yuan (2002), “Research has shown that different price presentations affect consumers’ evaluations of a deal offer” (as cited in Weisstein, & Monroe, (2009), p. 216).  In this case study, The Great Rebate Runaround, one could see that this type of strategy would be a customized pricing technique that companies use to get different customers to buy at different times during the time the product is eligible to be bought.  Some customers will be willing to buy the specific product at full price, while other will be willing to wait until the price is more affordable for them.  Companies will uses the different rebates to entice those customers who are on the fence until a deal is offered.  These companies plan on some of those customers will not renew the rebates, thus resulting in greater profits even at offering their products at lower prices.

Offer Rebates than Decrease Wholesale Prices

Even if all rebates were redeemed, which is highly unlikely, companies should offer rebates as opposed to decreasing wholesale prices.  Why?  Consumers love a bargain, or the perception of a bargain.  If companies lower wholesale prices, they will be leaving money on the table.  The odds of every rebate being redeemed will be rare and as a result, many of those who buy with the thought of redeeming those rebates will not follow through allowing those companies to have higher revenue than they would with lowering wholesale prices.

Why is Best Buy Considering Eliminating Rebates?

According to Ong (2008), “Because of high ‘breakage’ or unredeemed rate, mail-in rebates are unlikely to go away soon despite many consumer complaints.  Ong (2008) also says that manufacturers and retailers count on a portion of their buyers not redeeming their rebates.  This will help reduce promotional costs and it gets the buyers to think about the discount and not think about the full retail price.  For this reason, I am surprised that Best Buy is considering eliminating their rebates to their customers.  Sony and other big competitors realize that by offering rebates there will be customers who will not redeem those rebates and will increase the revenue of their products.

One reason that Best Buy may be considering in discontinuing their rebate program is the many complaints that consumers file because of the long and sometimes tedious process of filling out and mailing in the rebate form.  Sometimes the impression of the consumer is more important than going through the process of trying to improve their respective image that complaints cause.

Participation in this learning activity is worth 2.5% of your final grade.

For this activity, you will explore your understanding of effective listening skills in an organizational setting. You may be able to use the ideas you develop here in your final project. Before you tackle this exercise, please make sure you have read the Week 5 course materials.

Objective: This question is designed to help you gain insight on your final project’s communication problem. You may be able to use material from this activity in your final project.

Background: Please begin this exercise by reading the following information carefully.

Research on adults’ listening styles by Sargent and Weaver (2003) and others suggests that women use their listening skills to learn about people and to make connections with others, while men listen more for information and to solve intellectual challenges. The findings do not mean women do not engage in content-oriented listening and that men do not engage in people-oriented listening. Both sexes clearly engage in both types of listening. However, Sargent and Weaver and other researchers say findings like these indicate that women and men generally do, indeed, have different approaches to listening.

Activity:

How might you apply this information about sex differences in listening styles to your communication in the workplace*?

(*Remember, if you are not employed or cannot discuss your workplace, you may draw upon your experiences in another organizational setting in which you are involved, such as a school, church, or community group.)

Unit V Case Study

Instructions
Waterways (Chapter 19)

For this assignment, you will apply what you have learned from the unit lesson and required unit resources. The Waterways (WP19) case is located on page 19-39 of the textbook.

Waterways Corporation is a private corporation formed for the purpose of providing the products and the services needed to irrigate farms, parks, commercial projects, and private lawns. It has a centrally located factory in a U.S. city that manufactures the products it markets to retail outlets across the nation. It also maintains a division that performs installation and warranty servicing in six metropolitan areas.

The mission of Waterways is to manufacture quality parts that can be used for effective irrigation projects that also conserve water. By that effort, the company hopes to satisfy its customers, perform rapid and responsible service, and serve the community and the employees who represent them in each community.

The company has been growing rapidly, so management is considering new ideas to help the company continue its growth and maintain the high quality of its products.

Waterways was founded by Will Winkman, who is the company president and chief executive officer (CEO). Working with him from the company’s inception is Will’s brother, Ben, whose sprinkler designs and ideas about the installation of proper systems have been a major basis of the company’s success. Ben is the vice president who oversees all aspects of design and production in the company.

The factory itself is managed by Todd Senter, who hires his line managers to supervise the factory employees. The factory makes all of the parts for the irrigation systems. The purchasing department is managed by Helen Hines.

The installation and training division is overseen by vice president, Henry Writer, who supervises the managers of the six local installation operations. Each of these local managers hires his or her own local service people. These service employees are trained by the home office under Henry Writer’s direction because of the uniqueness of the company’s products.

There is a small human resources department under the direction of Sally Fenton, a vice president who handles the employee paperwork, though hiring is actually performed by the separate departments. Teresa Totter is the vice president who heads the sales and marketing area; she oversees 10 well-trained salespeople.

The accounting and finance division of the company is headed by Ann Headman, who is the chief financial officer (CFO) and a company vice president; she is a member of the Institute of Management Accountants and holds a certificate in management accounting. She has a small staff of accountants, including a controller and a treasurer, and a staff of accounting input operators who maintain the financial records.

A partial list of Waterways’ accounts and their balances for the month of November is itemized below.

  • A list of accounts and their values are given above. From this information, prepare a cost of goods manufactured schedule, an income statement, and a partial balance sheet for the month of November, which should be created using Excel.

If you elect to create your organizational chart in a Word document, then you will need to submit both a Word document (containing the organizational chart) and an Excel document (containing the cost of goods manufactured schedule, income statement, and partial balance sheet). If you elect to create your organizational chart in Excel, you will only submit an Excel document, which would contain all components of the assignment.

APA formatting is not necessary.

Discussion 514 Ethics and Coaching

Step 1) Consider that ethical dilemmas are called that because there is often not one clear-cut answer for what is right and what is wrong. The coaching relationship is fraught with ethical dilemmas, including:

  • Emotional, behavioral, or personality issues with coachees (such as potential suicides or illegal acts)
  • Emotional, behavioral, or personality issues with the coach (prolonging the coaching arrangement for financial gain)
  • Failure to respect professional boundaries between coach and coachee (possible inappropriate personal involvement or abuse of power)
  • Conflicts of interest among various stakeholders (such as failure to keep confidential information from management)

Step 2) Read about the main ethical considerations governing coaches and coaching relationships in the following book found in the Trident Online Library. The authors propose a model for ethical decision-making in coaching—the ACTION model—specifically designed for people working in leadership coaching. Although written for professional coaches, leaders who coach subordinates in a mentoring role can benefit from using the guidelines in this chapter to shape their own behavior as well.

Passmore, J., & Mortimer, L. (2011). Ethics in coaching. In G. Hernez-Broom, & L. A. Boyce (Eds.), Advancing executive coaching: Setting the course for successful leadership coaching (pp. 205-227). Hoboken, NJ: Jossey-Bass.

Step 3) Read this classic article on the ethics of mentoring that specifically addresses ethical issues from the perspective of the imbalance of power between the mentor (or boss) and the subordinate.

Moberg, D. J. & Valasquez, M. (2004) The ethics of mentoring, Business Ethics Quarterly 14(1): 95-122.

Step 4) Below are several ethical situations a coach may have:

  1. Is it ethical to receive a “special” price for services or goods from a client or coachee?
  2. Is it ethical to date a client/coachee’s sister or brother?
  3. Is it ethical to buy a car from a client/coachee who owns the only dealership in the area?
  4. Is it ethical to ask a client/coachee for a ride to the airport?
  5. Are there circumstances where it would be OK to have a sexual relationship with a client/coachee?

When reviewing ethical situations, coaches should consider the following elements within the coaching relationship:

  • How much of a power differential is there between the coach and the other person?
  • Will it be brief contact or will it be continuous or episodic contact over a long time?
  • Has the relationship been permanently terminated, and does the client understand that as well?

Step 5) Select one of the ethical situations from “a” through “e” above.

Step 6) Answer the following questions below using question and answer (Q&A) format; in other words, include the original question along with your response. Within your post, support your responses with information from the background materials or reputable outside sources, and provide the full citation at the end. Use APA format for your references. Bring in your own personal experiences, readings, and research, where applicable.

  • Which ethical situation did you select?
  • In your opinion, would this situation be unethical? Why or why not?
  • How does the element of power factor into your opinion?
  • How does the element of duration factor into your opinion?
  • How does the element of termination factor into your opinion?
  • Are you drawing on any particular ethical framework in formulating your response (for example, the ethical frameworks introduced in ETH501)? If so, identify what that is and cite your source.

Leadership Competency Wk 3 Discussion 1

In the essay address and answer the following

According to the leadership competency assessment, share your strongest competency and your weakest competency, and comment on your general reaction to the findings of the assessment. Do not share your actual score, only which competencies were identified as strongest and weakest.

Based on the results of your leadership competency assessment, explain two ideas that were of particular interest to you or that you found most compelling (e.g., “a-ha!” moments) from the results. Provide a rationale to support your conclusion.

  • Identify someone from professional experiences who have strength in the same leadership      competency and share how you think this strength could have potential drawbacks, trade-offs, or negative consequences for leaders.
  • Identify someone from professional experiences who weaknesses in the same leadership      competency as you. Provide examples of how both of you might build your competency in this area, how both of you might overcome this weakness, and what effect the choice to address or not address this weakness may have on your goals.
  • Can someone really transform a weakness into strength? In what situations might it be more important to focus on one’s strengths? Is it always important to try to address one’s weaknesses? Why or why not? What suggestions would you have if a person has not been able to overcome a particular weakness?

Essay 2 Assignment Instructions (Working Thesis Essay) ( just have to read this, no need to work for this!!!)

Final Draft Due: week 4 (see Canvas for due dates) Worth: 20% of your total grade

Rough Draft Due: week 3 (see Canvas for due dates)

PURPOSE

  • To demonstrate critical reading and thinking skills
  • To illustrate the ability to formulate a strong and compelling thesis statement
  • To understand how to utilize pre-writing and revising techniques
  • To prepare an MLA-formatted essay to serve as a plan for a research essay
  • To illustrate how to take feedback on previous essay to improve in a subsequent essay

For essay #3, you will be writing a “Working Thesis Essay,” as described in chapter 5 of TPRW (連結到外部網站。) . After reviewing this prompt, the research essay prompt, and the sample essay(s), write your own MLA-formatted working thesis essay, following the instructions below:

WRITING PROMPT

Write a brief narrative essay where you discuss the topic you have decided to research and write about.  Tell your audience, your fellow classmates and your instructor how you arrived at this topic, some of the other ideas you considered in your brainstorming activities, and the working thesis you have settled on for the start of your project. Also, be sure to let us know about some of the initial library [or other online/credible] research you have found so far.

Even though this is a short essay (approx. 750 words), it should be very detailed, show evidence of significant thought and consideration, as also illustrate that you have started your research by including several credible sources you have found. In addition, attention to the feedback you received on essay 2 peer reviews should be obvious with evidence of revision and editing on this essay.

*This essay is required to move onto essay 3 (the research essay). Students who change their topics for the research essay after writing this essay must first complete a new working thesis essay based on the new topic

respond 1

Yes, I am clear on what a working thesis essay is and what the essay prompt 2 is asking me to do. I are supposed to write about a debatable topic I decide to research, the process that leads to an initial stance on that topic, other topics I consider, the initial working thesis I decide on, and the initial resources I find while researching. This is different than most other essays in that this will be a narrative essay, written in first person. Also, it’s not an actual essay per se but an essay about the thesis of the essay to come that will evolve and change as we do more research.

The sample essay is a great example of a working thesis essay, and clarifies what is expected for this assignment. It gives background information about the topic and why the student chose that topic. Stu went further to explain how a more general topic, through brainstorming and research, the working thesis was derived, and why it’s important. He also gave several resources he found to progress in the research process. A possible weakness I can think of is, I’m not sure if the thesis is debatable. It sounds like it may be more of an informative essay. Also, if the student was given the same prompt, he didn’t include other topics that were considered.

respond 2

Before reading chapter 5 I have never ever heard about a working thesis, I have always thought that a thesis was constant. While reading the chapter I understood that a working thesis is supposed to evolve while writing an essay and not stay as a final thesis. While a regular thesis is stated and keeps its statement throughout the essay a working thesis essay will not stay the same since it is evolving during the course of the writing of the essay. The working thesis is evolving because while writing, researching and gaining more knowledge about the topic the thesis will evolve too in the same way the person that is writing the essay will evolve its own thoughts while gaining more information about facts about the subject.

For the sample essay I would say that one of the strengths would be that it has a good structure, probably a structure that I will get inspired of and try to copy it a little myself but still make it my own. To be completely honest, I do not see a weakness in the sample essay, I am not sure if it is because English is not my first language or about something else. I would love to for someone to answer my discussion post with answers about the weakness of the sample essay for me to understand and to be able to see it from another point of view. The only thing that I would want to add would be to at least add the links for from the info, just because if I would write this kind of draft, I would like to have the links to the research I have made available.

Choose only one (1) of the following scenarios. Answer the questions for your chosen scenario using a “Question and Answer” format. The entire paper should be 1 – 2 pages in length.

Scenario #1: Setting Goals

Ally is a 4-year old girl, whose mom just had a baby three weeks ago. Throughout the day at pre-school, Ally has begun talking like a baby and wants to be held often. This is perfectly normal behavior when a new sibling arrives.

  1. Answer all of the following questions or prompts with complete sentences:
  2. Identify and describe two (2) strategies Ally’s teacher can implement to help Ally with her behavior.

OR

Scenario #2: Mistaken Behavior

Carrie has three boys and drops off her middle son, Sebastian, who is almost three, at the childcare center 20 minutes before the other children in his class arrive. Because of Carrie’s work schedule, this needs to happen every morning. Sebastian really enjoys playing in the block area and is happy playing with two of his imaginary friends, “Bob” and “Conroy.” Sebastian is in such a great mood during this time! He laughs and shares the blocks with his “friends.” As soon as another child arrives at the center and wants to play in the block area too, Sebastian screams, “NO! This is MY block place! Go away!” He cries and is inconsolable for at least 30 minutes. He falls to the floor kicking and screaming, seemingly unconcerned about hurting anyone he might kick during his tantrum.

  1. Answer all of the following questions or prompts with complete sentences:
  2. Which level of Mistaken Behavior is Sebastian displaying?
  3. Identify two (2) possible reasons Sebastian might be having this tantrum.
  4. Which democratic life skill is Sebastian needing support with?
  5. Identify and describe three (3) strategies you could implement that would guide Sebastian’s behavior and teach him alternative ways to get what he is missing.

TIP: Be sure to use at least one (1) outside resource to support your work and cite it properly on an APA formatted References page. The source(s) should help support your positions on the items above.

Memo Responses due 12 hours Time Warner Case study: Economics

General Instructions:

After you read the Time Warner Case Study, take a look at the accompanying 13 Memos.

Take a quick review of all the memos to get a “feel” for the general issues involved.   Your mission,  should you decide to accept it,  is to tackle the following memo  11,  and 12.

Please answer directly and be to the point.  An economy of style is appreciated but that does not mean you have to skip over points you deem pertinent.    Please note:  You are not required to look up journal literature to answer the questions.   However,  you may use the internet as a tool to help you answer the questions in the same way you may use the textbook and your notes.  Enter the memo responses by number in BB.   You can attach a Word file or enter your answer directly into the text box.

11 and 12 are concerned with various aspects of competitive strategy and pricing.

In memo 11,  besides calculating the optimal ala carte prices,  please answer why some special interest groups would be opposed to bundling and instead insist on ala carte pricing.    On the other hand,  please discuss why the Cable company is opposed to ala carte pricing and instead insists on bundling.  Is there any way to appease these select special interest groups.

Memo 12 is a Network externality question.  Here,  competition is putting pressure on existing networks and legacy pricing approaches.

Good luck,  and may the Economic force be with you.

This assignment is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 6.

operations unit 4 discussion

Many discussion opportunities come up where you need to respond to other people’s opinions and comments. Respond to your Discussion topic after you have completed your Reading.

Facility Design

Operations managers must be concerned with more than final outcomes (the final product or service delivered). They must be involved in determining the processes used to develop and create the final product and how they can be created or manufactured within the current capacities of the organization.

Successful organizations appear complex because they are made up of a multitude of different departments with each having a specific responsibility in the creation and delivery of the final product or service.

For this Discussion, you will need to conduct research on capacity and facilities before you can prepare a complete response to the questions asked. Start this research by reviewing the Web Field Trip resources below.
