Appeals are rhetorical devices used to help persuade an audience. Appeals do not necessarily make an argument credible; however, they can make the argument more relatable or believable. The appeals listed below can strengthen an argument when used correctly and in proper moderation, but can cheapen a rhetorical work if misused or overused. 

Socratic Appeals: 

Ethos–offers the audience evidence that he or she is credible. The communicator attempts to prove that he or she is well-informed about the topic at hand and that he or she is a good person with the audience’s best interests in mind. This type
of appeal may use testimonials, specialists, or God as support for his or her work. 

Logos–offers the audience clear, reasonable ideas developed through reasoning and logic. This type of appeal may use reasoned examples, details and/or statistics. 

Pathos–draws on the audience’s emotions so they will be sympathetic to the communicator’s ideas. 

General Appeals (that fall under the umbrella of ethos, logos or pathos): 

Altruism--appeals to an audience’s sense of goodness or morality. 

Anger–appeals to an audience’s sense of anger, outrage or hate. 

Fear–appeals to an audience’s fears or anxieties.

Flag-waving or patriotic–appeals to an audience’s sense of patriotism. 

Intelligence–appeals to an audience’s reasoning or wisdom. 

Plain Folk–appeals to the experiences of the common man.

Snob–appeals to an audience’s taste for the finer, and usually unobtainable, things in life.

Create a PowerPoint or Google slides with the example(s) of each of the appeals and provide a brief explanation of how the words and/or images embody that appeal.

Discussion 1: Leadership Theories in Practice

A walk through the Business section of any bookstore or a quick Internet search on the topic will reveal a seemingly endless supply of writings on leadership. Formal research literature is also teeming with volumes on the subject.

However, your own observation and experiences may suggest these theories are not always so easily found in practice. Not that the potential isn’t there; current evidence suggests that leadership factors such as emotional intelligence and transformational leadership behaviors, for example, can be highly effective for leading nurses and organizations.

Yet, how well are these theories put to practice? In this Discussion, you will examine formal leadership theories. You will compare these theories to behaviors you have observed firsthand and discuss their effectiveness in impacting your organization.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and examine the leadership theories and behaviors introduced.
  • Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.
  • Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.

Post two key insights you had from the scholarly resources you selected. Executive Practical Connection – 

For this project, select an organization that has leveraged Cloud Computing technologies in an attempt to improve profitability or to give them a competitive advantage.  Research the organization to understand the challenges that they faced and how they intended to use Cloud Computing to overcome their challenges.  The paper should include the following sections each called out with a header.

• Company Overview:  The section should include the company name, the industry they are in and a general overview of the organization.
• Challenges: Discuss the challenges the organization had that limited their profitability and/or competitiveness and how they planned to leverage Cloud Computing to overcome their challenges.
• Solution:  Describe the organization’s Cloud Computing implementation and the benefits they realized from the implementation.  What was the result of implementing Cloud Computing?  Did they meet their objectives for fall short?
• Conclusion:  Summarize the most important ideas from the paper and also make recommendations or how they might have achieved even greater success.

Requirements:

The paper must adhere to APA guidelines including Title and Reference pages.  There should be at least three scholarly sources listed on the reference page.  Each source should be cited in the body of the paper to give credit where due.  Per APA, the paper should use a 12-point Time New Roman font, should be double spaced throughout, and the first sentence of each paragraph should be indented .5 inches.  The body of the paper should be 3 – 5 pages in length.  The Title and Reference pages do not count towards the page count requirements.

Hello Professor and Class,

     I have noticed the overuse of emergency rooms and how they are costing the hospital more money, so certain illnesses should be directed to an urgent care instead. For this proposal, there really is not a direct affected population because this issue affects everyone in the community. It affects everyone in the community because the hospital ends up having to spend a lot of extra money and tend to lose money that the hospital might have to increase their charges to make up for what they lost. So, the population that I hope this reaches the most is the uninsured and the underinsured so they will know to start going to an urgent care instead of the emergency room and they will understand the difference between the two. 

     The main problem I am having working on this draft is actually getting started and knowing what direction that I want to go because I do not want to get far into it and then there be a road block and I cannot go any further. However, once I get started then I can usually keep going. Also, trying to find out who I need to address my proposal to.

Throughput, from the ICU to the floor, is an inefficient process that takes too much time and includes many variables that can be improved upon. This topic includes several target populations, but for the sake of this class, we can focus on the administrative population. Administration controls multiple variables in the throughput process. Administration is in charge of communicating with the ICU of available beds on the floor when they are notified a patient is ready to move. The need for this variable is a more efficient communication process. Administration is in charge of supplying a telemetry box for the patient when they move to the floor. The need for this variable is that many times, a telemetry box isn’t available for several hours. A more efficient allocation process of telemetry boxes or purchasing more telemetry boxes would be the need. Administration is responsible for allowing floors to have acceptable staffing ratios on the floor, so they can be ready to take patients from the ICU. Sometimes, the floor will call the ICU and say they cannot take the patient out of the ICU, because there aren’t enough nurses to accept the patient. The need here would be for better staffing ratios.

Other target populations include physicians and nursing. The physicians are responsible for signing off on ICU patients when they are ready to move to the floor. Nursing is required to get the patient ready for the floor and move them to the floor. These two populations, physicians and nursing, could allocate their time more efficiently when moving patients to the floor.

At this point, I am not necessarily having any issues with this draft.
