Oral History Project Plan

Learning from other women is a major component of Women’s Studies scholarship. Through Oral Histories (interviews that record the history of a person), we can learn about the experiences of other women, and then analyze these experiences in terms of what we know about Women’s Studies.

For the major project in this course, you will conduct an interview with a woman whose background differs from yours (she might be older, younger, of a different ethnic group, has children, does not, a different religion, etc.). You will need to design the questions for your interview based on the concerns and issues we are studying in this course. Later, you will write an 800-1200 word (3-4 pages) report in which you analyze the interview you conducted in relationship to Women’s Studies.

For the assignment due this week, you will begin by planning your interview.

Project Plan Requirements

Decide whom you will interview for your project (and why), and then submit a two paragraph Project Plan:

  1. The first paragraph should name the subject you have chosen and explain why you believe she will make a good interview subject for a Women’s Studies Oral History. This paragraph should include some discussion of the Women’s Studies issues you plan to bring up in the interview. (50 points)
  2. The second paragraph should describe your plan for conducting the interview, including the when/where/how of the process. Also explain what your backup plan is in the case that your original choice is unavailable or changes her mind. (50 points)

Description

Instructions

It is anticipated that the initial discussion response should be in the range of 250-300 words. Response posts must demonstrate topic knowledge and scholarly engagement with peers. This is not the only criteria utilized for evaluation; substantive content is imperative. All questions in the topic must be addressed. Please proofread your response carefully for grammar and spelling. Do not upload any attachments. All responses need to be supported by a minimum of one scholarly resource. Journals and websites must be cited appropriately. Citation and reference must adhere to APA format.

Classroom Participation

Students are expected to initially address the discussion question by Wednesday of each week. Participation in the discussion forums is expected with a minimum total of three (3) substantive postings (this includes your initial posting and posting to two peers) on three (3) different days per week. Substantive means that you add something new to the discussion, you aren’t just agreeing. This is also a time to ask questions or offer information surrounding the topic addressed by your peers. Personal experience is appropriate for a substantive discussion and should be correlated to the literature.

All discussion boards will be evaluated utilizing rubric criterion inclusive of content, analysis, collaboration, writing and APA. If you fail to post an initial discussion you will not receive these points, you may however post to your peers for partial credit following the guidelines above. Due to the nature of this type of assignment and the need for timely responses for initial posts and posting to peers, the Make-Up Coursework Policy (effective July 2017) does not apply to Discussion Board https://homeworkharbour.info/papers Participation.

Operations Management

General Guidelines for Case Studies

A case study is a short description of a real business situation. Analyzing case studies gives you the opportunity to apply concepts you’re learning to real business problems. Cases are generally written for several types of analysis. Usually, there is not a “right or wrong” answer. Rather, cases provide a vehicle for you to demonstrate your understanding and ability to apply course concepts and theories. You must use appropriate sources (properly cited) to support your position. Check your analysis by assessing how well it demonstrates your subject knowledge. If your answer relies solely on your ‘impressions’ of the topic, it is likely that the analysis is not your best effort.

Simply answering the questions which are part of the case is not enough; consider the questions to be clues to the important concepts and facts. You are strongly encouraged to use the following outline so that your analysis is organized appropriately:

  1. Identify both the key issues and the underlying issues. In identifying the issues, you should be able to connect them to the business principles which apply to this situation.
  2. Discuss the facts which affect these issues. The case may have too much information. In your discussion, you should filter the information and discuss those facts which are pertinent to the issues identified above.
  3. Discuss your tentative solution to the problem and how you would implement your solution. What actions would you propose to respond to the situation, based on the knowledge you have gained in this course? You should draw on knowledge gained in your readings, experience and coursework (in this course and others) to support your response. Be sure to properly cite references in APA format. You should also draw on other references such as business periodicals and relevant journals. Remember that an analysis is more than simply a summary of the Case Study.
  4. Discuss follow-up and contingency plans. How will the organization know that your proposed solution is working? What should they do if it does not work?

Your analysis of each case study should be written in APA format. If you need assistance with APA formatting, the Online Writing Lab at Purdue University has excellent APA-specific resources available here: Purdue OWL APA Style Help.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Have you identified the critical issues/problems in the case and analyzed the key facts related to the issues/problems?
  • Have you discussed a tentative solution that addresses the issues/problems and how you would implement your solution?
  • Is information from the textbook and other sources integrated into your analysis appropriately? For all sources, you must provide complete APA citations.
  • Is the paper professionally presented? Remember your audience. It is important to present your information as clearly and succinctly as possible. Do not sacrifice thoroughness for mere brevity.
  • Have you read it over carefully and corrected any grammar and spelling errors?

The Southwest example is included to show what can be learned from Financial statements.  You will not use that format  for your answers to this assignment.  Per the assignment guidelines, all calculations must be shown in an Excel file..  Your responses should show that you have read and understood the required readings, links and attached files – Provide appropriate citations and references.

Individual Assignment (8%):

You should answer all of the questions listed below as they relate to the financial statements of any U.S. public company of your choice in its latest annual report. Please use the Securities and Exchange Commission web site as your primary source for financial statements.  All publicly traded U S companies have their annual reports called the 10-K available through the Securities and Exchange Commission web site.  http://www.sec.gov/

Instructions for use of the site are as follows:  About half way down the home page is a box titled Search EDGAR, free access to over 21 million filings.  Enter the company name or ticker symbol.  That brings up a page called EDGAR Search Results.  In the line “filter results”  enter “10-K” in filing type and hit search.  That will bring up recent company annual reports. Note: You have a choice of “Documents” or “Interactive Data.” Both contain all the information.  “Interactive Data” uses Excel and provides the best access to information for questions 1, 2, and 3. “Documents”  provides information that is easy to read for questions 4 through 8.  After you click on Documents, click on the red letters and numbers to the right of the “10-K” heading.

Also you can find the financial statements of any U.S. public company by visiting Morningstar, Yahoo Finance or MSN Money, and using the stock market symbol for your chosen company (which can be looked up on Morningstar, Yahoo Finance or MSN Money).  Please be aware that sometimes these services omit some numbers in order to fit their preferred formats. Many companies have links to the Annual Report as filed with the SEC.  It can be found on the Investor relations page of the company web site.

If you work for a U.S. public company, you may want to use the financial statements of your company – but the choice is up to you.

1) What 3 items of important information does the income statement reveal about the financial performance of the company over the last three years?

2) What 3 items of important information does the balance sheet reveal about the financial position of the company over the last two years?

3) Can you identify the major sources of funding used by the company from the information presented in the company’s annual report?  Please look at the Statement of Cash Flows, formerly called the Source and Uses of Funds Statement.

4) Who is responsible for:

      a) the issuance, and

      b) the content

of the company financial statements? (Note: this information may be difficult to find.  Look for statements by management and the independent auditing firm.)

5) What assurance, if any, is there that the financial statements are in compliance with GAAP, and are free of material misstatements?

6) Of what use, if any, are the notes to the financial statements? Give an example of something learned from the footnotes of your company.

7) What can you learn from the Business Section of the 10-K?  Give two facts learn from reading this section.

8) What can you learn from the Management Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations (MD&A)?  Give two facts learned from reading this section.
