What are the indicators of exceptionality a classroom teacher should look for when a student also has a language barrier?

I interviewed professor Aziz Benmimoun from public school PS 721q.

1. What are the indicators of exceptionality a classroom teacher should look for when a student also has a language barrier?

Language performance deficiency is often misunderstood and many ELL’s are being referred for special need. Exceptional students usually exhibit behavioral as well as learning disabilities.

4

2. How do informal and formal assessment results factor into placement?

Data is key in formal assessments, especially data that supports the inferences that were made from the exam. The data is computed prior to summarization.

3. what role do parents and teachers have in placement?

Parents are crucial members of the team because because they have first hand knowledge of their childs strengths and needs. Parents have the right to be involved in the meetings and the IEP process.

4. what are some primary factors that are exhibited in underachievement that may not necessarily signal special education needs?

Underachievement is usually viewed as a student being below average. Every student is different and factors will be based as such.

5. How are changes among individual ELL proficiency levels over the course of the school yearaccounted for?

Over the course of the school year, the students proficiency levels tend to progress from the speaking, reading and listening before achieving proficiency in writing. The trend is that writing is the last and most difficult skill an ELL student masters before becoming proficient in the L2.

6. How are diagnostic, formative, and summartive assessments integrated for Ells in the mainstream classrooms?

Assessments in all forms are essential in designing coherent instruction. Without ongoing assessments, the instructor will not be able to diagnose therefore meet the needs of his students.

7. What are the benefits of the SIOP protocol for native English speakers as well as those for whom English is an anditional language?

Small group instructions is at most benefit to students regardless of language proficiency, as instruction is tailored to each students needs.

How does the assessment and placement process in your state facilitate achievement among ELLs?

In New York, the New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners (NYSITELL) is the only assessment instrument for measuring the English language proficiency of a student who may be an ELL. The results of this test are used to determine the type of instructional program into which the student must be placed.

Comparison of the use of the AZELLA to the assessment and placement process in New York.

The AZELLA is used for placement and reassessment purposes for students who are identified as a second language learner. Unlike New York, students who are set into an English language learner program will take the AZELLA reassessment once a year until achieving English proficiency.

How do AZELLA score reports facilitate achievement among ELLs?

After the test has been administered along with bringing out the results, the district is responsible for making this information useful. Based on the results, work on improving the skills of English Language Learners.

Over the past year subscriber uncollectables have grown 40% above the previous years. The executives of the company want to see at least double digit business growth for the company and have agreed to new marketing campaigns to promote new subscribers.

You Are the Consultants

Case #3

Over the past year subscriber uncollectables have grown 40% above the previous years. The executives of the company want to see at least double digit business growth for the company and have agreed to new marketing campaigns to promote new subscribers.

Problem:

The reason for the high growth rate in uncollectable accounts is not clear. The growth in these accounts has caused the net earnings of the company to be lower than expected. What do you recommend that the company do to solve the uncollectable issue?

Instructions on next page!

Instructions
1. Use your training in economics and business to address the problems. As a consultant, you need to first make sure you are familiar with the company and the industry you are working for by doing preliminary research. Then read the description carefully to determine the main conflict/issue. The suggestions and solutions provided should be, logical, realistic and reasonable.

2. You can use the following questions as a guide to your proposed actions.

a. Who is responsible for making the decision?

b. Does the decision maker have enough information to make a good decision? If not what information is required?

c. Do they have incentive to do so?

d. How would you go about determining the best course of action?

3. Prepare a voice-over presentation to discuss the statement of the problem/issue and potential business alternatives. The file name should be ‘Last name _project name’.

4. The ppt should include a cover slide, showing at the least the title of the presentation and the name(s) of the consultants. The ppt should be not more than 3 slides, excluding the cover slide and reference, if any.

5. The presentation should take no longer than 5 minutes. No written submission is needed.

6. It is assumed that you are giving the presentation to the executives of the company. Use the appropriate tone and wording during your presentation. Pay attention to the type of audience you are facing.

7. Do not read off the slides. Do not simply read off the script that you might have written down. You need to give a talk using the ppt slides as an aid. Reading and talking are two different things and people (including me) can often tell the difference easily.

8. Make simple slides and limit the amount of content. Too much content or graphics can be overwhelming and carry the audience away from your talk. Unless absolutely necessary, restrain from using pictures and cartoons.

9. You can prepare scripts for your presentation. However, it is highly recommended that you do not read from the scripts in your presentation unless you can read it as if reading lines for a play without sounding robotically.

10. Rehearse before recording! Presentations not well prepared with adversely affect your performance.

11. The file name should be ‘Last name_project name’ for group work and ‘Last name_First name_project name’.

You are working as a senior researcher for a company (of your own choice) to conduct business research in order to solve an issue/situation. The issue that the company is facing requires rigorous business research.

Student Guide for Short paper  Research Proposal:

(need 3 different  proposals  with presentations and Voice over)

You are working as a senior researcher for a company (of your own choice) to conduct business research in order to solve an issue/situation. The issue/situation the company is facing could be a problem, such as declined revenue, or a potential opportunity, such as the introduction of a new product or the exploration of new market. The issue that the company is facing requires rigorous business research. It is not a problem that can be resolved through sim
ple thinking or discussion. The research proposal is the research plan that you, as the senior researcher, submit to the management for approval before conducting the research. It is a contract between you and management in terms of the steps of the business, budget and timeline.
In a Prospectus–a plan to do research–you do everything except for collect and analyze the data. Keep in mind that you are hired by the company to conduct the proposed research in order to help the management make informed decisions
Steps
1.You first need to select a company and a research problem that you want to
study. This is the Short paper  topic submission.
2.After your topic is selected, you write an abbreviated research proposal
indicating the background of the problem, the purpose of the study, the research
and sample design, and the budget and times schedule.
Use page 124 in the textbook (page 124) as an example.
3.You also need to present your research proposal in a voice-over presentation.
Requirements for the presentation part
Prepare no more than 5 slides (excluding the cover slide) to present your research proposal. The voice -over presentation should be no more than 5 minutes.
Here is a youtube video to help you with recording the voice-over presentation:

Note that if you are preparing the voice-over using a Mac, you need to make sure the save file can be open by a PC and the voice can be heard. Here is a list of things you need to pay attention when preparing the presentation
1.Make sure you to record over every ppt slide. That is, do not give your whole
presentation over the first slide. You need to turn the pages as you go over them
one by one.

2.
Given an overview of the presentation before formally presenting the detailed
contents.
3.
Rehearse before recording the presentation.
4.
