Alternative Virtual Experiencing History Assignment

This assignment is only for those students who have documented health or geographical limitations that prohibits them from participating in the group, on-site assignment. If you are in that cohort of students, you will “experience” Canada’s past through a virtual presentation of history.  The “Experiencing History Assignment” is structured around experiential learning outcomes. You are required to visit one of the virtual historic sites/museums listed on the Virtual Museum site (www.virtualmuseum.ca).  Please note that not all the sites listed in this Virtual Museum are suitable for this assignment; the Virtual Museum you choose must focus on people, events and places that had importance for Pre-Confederation Canada (ie: after 1867).  Before you move ahead with your research and analysis you must have your preferred historical site or museum pre-approved by me.

Your Experiencing History Assignment will include:

1. A 1-page introduction that includes a clear statement of your position on the representation of history at the site.  You MUST make a clear, concise statement outlining your understanding of the ‘narrative’ that the site is trying to communicate.  What is its central ‘thesis’?  What specific ‘history’ is it telling and how is it relating it?

2.  A 2 page analysis of the historical literature that might help you to interpret the site and its place within the broader context of CDN history.  Your research MUST include at least 5 academic library sources (peer-reviewed articles or books) beyond the resources found on the site’s web-page and their own published materials.  If you have any questions about what constitutes as “academic source” please submit your bibliography for my approval.  It is really important that you show your understanding of the arguments presented by these authors.

3.  A 3-page “Critical Assessment” section where you will analyze how ‘history’ was presented at the site and in the published materials.  DO NOT JUST DESCRIBE THE CONTENTS OF THE SITE!  Everything that you interact with at the site is communicating something of the history that it is telling.  You must show with specific examples from your site how the exhibits and related materials represent a certain interpretation of the past.  Based on your research (#2 above), how does the site reflect broader academic opinion on your historical topic, issue or event?  What is being included?  What is excluded from the ‘story’ or ‘narrative’ of the site?  Does the site have any ‘negative’ or overly critical aspects to it or is it a celebration of community/regional/provincial/ ethnic/national pride?  What are the strengths and weaknesses of the construction of history that you observed?  Remember, everything you see, hear and interact with is specifically designed to communicate something of the past.   You can include pictures from the site as evidence but be sure they are translated into your document as low resolution photographs so that the files are manageable (also note that pictures do not qualify as “text”; you need to have 5 pages of text to fulfil the requirements of the assignment).

4.  A 2 paragraph thoughtful conclusion that shows how the representation of history, and your analysis of it, relates to Canadian society today.

Assignment 2: Case Analysis: John Smith

Obtaining informed consent for services from clients is required of human services providers; however, it is not always an easy task. Clients typically grant consent by signing documents presented by the agency or the provider that, at minimum, explain the services that will be provided, the client rights, and information on the steps to rescind the consent.

In situations where minors or individuals under some form of guardianship are the clients, it is necessary to obtain consent from the legal guardian or authority. However, there are times when obtaining informed consent is not as simple as asking for a signature from the client or guardian. These situations require more thought by the human services providers with emphasis on balancing the client’s right to consent with other factors that might influence treatment outcomes or decisions.

In this assignment, you will review a case that illustrates the various facets of informed consent.

The Case:

Smith is a thirty-eight-year-old African American male referred for counseling by his mother to address recent incidents of aggression. Smith resides with his mother because he is not able to live on his own. Smith is unable to hold on to a job and has difficulty establishing and maintaining relationships with others. He is open to counseling but thinks his mother is overreacting to his anger outbursts because she is old and does not understand him. Recently, there have been notable conflicts between them due to Smith’s aggressive behaviors that were directed toward his mother.

Tasks:

Analyze the case and in a 2- to 3-page paper, address the following:

  • What steps would you, as the counselor, take for obtaining informed consent from Smith?
  • Would you, as the counselor, include his mother in the counseling sessions, if you believe it would help with Smith’s aggression problem? Why or why not?

In your answers, consider the following:

  • Smith is not able to live independently.
  • Smith’s aggression might put his mother at risk if he does not get counseling.
  • Smith has to comprehend what is being asked of him when he provides his consent to receive counseling services.
  • There might be cultural differences between you and Smith.

to write a 800 word paper on the topic

In this section you have studied several ethical arguments the purpose of which is to both say what is right or good and to justify the reward and punishment for human actions. Below is a case history that I would like for you to consider:
Jane is a 17 year old woman who, about a year ago, presented to the ER of a major New York hospital with symptoms consistent with a neurological problem. She was referred to the neurology department and upon testing was shown to have a condition called neurofibromatosis. Because this is a genetic condition for which there is no cure all that could be done was to operate to remove the benign tumor from here auditory pathways. This meant, however, that she lost all hearing.

The operation was successful and she was discharged for OP follow-up but within about one year she was discovered to have a new tumor growth along her visual pathway. The surgeon recommended a second operation to remove the tumor (without surgical intervention the tumor will grow to the point where brain tissue is destroyed), but Jane was reluctant to have this done. She argued that since the disease is progressive and terminal in any event that she would like to live for the rest of her life with vision. Because the doctor believed that while she might experience some reduction in quality of life she should have to operation because it would prolong her life by several years, maybe even a decade.

Take a position about what should be done and present an argument using one or more of the ethical arguments we covered so far. Offer a defense of your position use reasons and give a personal observation as to why you think your action will be productive of the best outcome.

Discussion 7

Answer the Discussion Board board questions in paragraph form

Joan Leikvold was hired by Valley View Community Hospital as an operating room supervisor in 1972. She did not have a contract for a specific duration, nor was she told that the hospital would not discharge her except for cause. She was provided with a policy manual and told that the policies were to be followed in her employment relationship with the hospital. In 1978, she became the director of nursing. In October 1979, she requested a transfer back to her former position in the operating room. The chief executive officer (CEO) felt that it was inadvisable for someone who had been in a managerial position to take a subordinate position. Leikvold withdrew the transfer request but was subsequently fired. Her personnel record indicated “insubordination” as the reason for discharge. Leikvold was an at-will employee. At-will means that there is a contract made for an indefinite duration and either party, employer or employee, may terminate the contract at any time for any reason, or without reason, provided the reason is not discriminatory. Can the CEO fire Leikvold?

1) Your response should be in depth (3-4 paragraphs for the initial post. Defend your position with concrete examples from the weekly content.

2) APA citation is required.

Chapter Overview

Because state and federal laws closely regulate medicine, students will need to know the laws and regulations that govern the practice of medicine and the procedures they are permitted to perform.

This chapter explains the many laws that students will encounter in the workplace. Discrimination is a prominent issue in the hiring and promotion of employees that your students will want to know about. This chapter also addresses sexual harassment, a serious problem in the workforce. Students will learn how the ADA regulates the hiring and promotion of physically and mentally disabled individuals; the FADA protects the rights of older workers; the Equal Pay Act prevents the practice of paying women less than men for the same job; the FLSA establishes a federal minimum wage, mandates extra pay for overtime work, and regulates the employment of children; the ERISA involves pensions; and, the OSHA affects health care workers, particularly with regulations involving right-to-know laws and blood-borne pathogens.

Other issues discussed in this chapter are workers’ compensation and social security, which affect every employer and employee. The chapter also explains that Medicare and Medicaid are government-sponsored health care delivery and compensation systems.

And, finally, this chapter makes clear that procedures manuals, job descriptions, and employee handbooks are all part of the business side of a medical practice, as are laws affecting collection procedures.
