Business Manners and Ethics

Requesting 200 words response to the following post using at least three substantive peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles to provide those a SUBSTANTIVE reply.

1.  Key Term and Why You Are Interested in It

I am interested in conducting further research on this key term because it is partially required to understand other cultures’ manners and customs in my profession. When scheduling travel for employees, I can ensure they understand the cultural requirements before arriving in other countries. We can prepare ahead of time to be respectful and knowledgeable of how and when to wear their attire. It is essential to know how to greet persons of other cultures and present yourself during meals instead of being offensive.

As someone who enjoys traveling and a military family, we must also become familiar with a diverse group of cultures.

2.  Explanation of the Key Term

Etiquette, manners, and cross-cultural or intercultural communication have become critical elements required for global business professionals (Satterlee, 2018, p.48). Understanding business manners and customs can assist with effective communication between countries. Once you are aware of their relevance, you will understand the appropriate way to behave. As international, multinational, transnational, multi-domestic, and global business continues to expand and bring people closer, the most critical element of successful business outcomes may be the appreciation and respect for regional, country, and cultural differences (Satterlee, 2018, p. 48). You must know the difference in the diversity of different cultures. It would be best if you did not assume Korea’s customs are acceptable in Japan.

3.  Major Article Summary

The article I selected to research the key term; business customs and manners, Understanding Cultural Singulartaries of ‘Indianness’ in Intercultural Business Setting discusses outsourcing information technology (IT) in India. It addresses personal conduct, pre-colonial disclosures, recent disclosures, methodology, intercultural incompetence, ignorance and stereotypes, and cultural narcissism (Laleman & Malik, 2015).

Combining culture and business can reach a broader range of our countries willing to outsource or join forces. The “Indiannes” are using different country dialects to address the specific culture in their native language. They will use American English on Americans and British English on the British. Using the specified language is how they feel they represent that country when speaking with someone of the culture. Indians receive a foreign exchange that benefits the outsourcers and putting India as a crucial player in the global business market (Laleman & Malik, 2015). The outsourcer and the outsourced need to understand the other cultures, allowing managers to know how to handle diversity in the workplace.

The article addresses the language barriers when creating outsourcing contracts and training programs. They use variations of word association games to help break the cultural barrier to develop effective communication between all businesses involved. They are creating a training program for each side of the contractual agreement.

The article discusses how five cultural values can determine the ‘Indianness’ workplace behaviors; 1) The jan-gan-man bhava: emotions towards the national anthem or political views. 2)  Rishta: focus on family values and relationships. 3) Bhojan (food): creating a social bond or discourse. 4) Jati-Gotra-Varna: a sense of community and social peerness. 5) Dharma: day-to-day behaviors, choices, and decisions (Laleman & Malik, 2015). Their cultural mannerisms and customs are incorporated into the business beliefs, not always by choice, understood to help cope with the job requirements (Laleman & Malik, 2015).

4.  Discussion

  1. Business manners and customs connect into every aspect of international business agreements. It is imperative to understand multicultural differences to maintain cordial relationships with other countries. There is an acceptance that each culture may incorporate traditions, religion, and politics into its work environment without prejudice or reprimand. The inclusion of politics could create confusion when not understood by another culture (Reznick, 2019). There was also a correlation that allowing cultural customs in job settings is a matter of human rights and sometimes used to control employees (Staeger, 2016). The rules could differ between local and foreign nationals. Businesses have found ways to persuade subordinates to become members of groups to benefit the organization by allowing the employee freedom and allowing the company to pay the employee less (Corneo, 1993). Diverse groups receive and interpret information differently, recognizing cultural and behavioral associations (Fitzsimmons & Thomas, 2017). Everyone adapts to their environment by attempting to comprehend their surroundings and respecting cultural differences.
  2. As a military spouse, I am expected to be resilient and adapt quickly to any new residential or workplace environment. This research revealed many unknowns because of protected information, which is comforting to now understand the why. There is a discussion of what do’s and don’ts are acceptable (Satterlee, 2018). The research of all cited sources shares the same goal of allowing persons of multicultural backgrounds to combine their values, morals, traditions, and beliefs in the workplace.  The intent was to find the connection between global interpersonal relationships and what they have in common. Then delineate the use of manners and customs. They explain how outsourcing countries misrepresented their purpose of agreeing to do business with other countries (Laleman & Malik, 2015). The articles discuss developing international training programs; you must understand different dialects within cultures to implement regulations to protect the agency and the employee (Staeger, 2016). You cannot discuss business manners and customs without divulging the workplace requirements and how cultural differences and political views play a role (Laleman & Malik, 2015). Each article is referencing specific elements of the key term.

Assignment: Course Project – Mission, Goals, Objectives, and Strategies

Whether or not you are aware of it, at some point in your life, you have set goals and objectives. From planning vacations and weddings to planning the purchase of a new car, setting goals and objectives is an integral part of the planning process. This is especially true when planning public health programs. Establishing goals and objectives is essential to the success of the program. Each program has a unique set of goals and objectives, both long- and short-term, tailored to the overall mission of the program. In addition, each program has specific strategies it uses in order to reach its mission, goals, and objectives. For instance, using the Hawaii example from your Discussion this week, the community identified both short-term objectives—recruiting participants and conducting classes—and long-term objectives—tracking progress for one year. Strategies to meet the objectives were outlined in the action steps, such as putting up posters and organizing support groups. All of the objectives and strategies were tied to the goals of changing lifestyle behavior with social support, group support, and community involvement and the mission of decreasing risk of chronic disease.

What are the goals of your Course Project public health program? What objectives and strategies will help reach the program goals? In this week’s section of your Course Project, you identify your program’s goals, objectives, and strategies.

To Prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review Chapter 6 in the McKenzie et al. text (especially p. 145) and focus on creating goals, objectives, and mission statements.
  • Think about two goals, two short-term objectives, two long-term objectives, and two strategies you might use to meet the goals in your public health program.
  • Review the Healthy People 2030 website to gain ideas from national initiatives that are similar to your program to create goals and objectives. Select the Objectives and Data tab and Browse Objectives, then scroll through the topics. When you find a topic similar to your program, select that topic and you will be able view the various objectives associated with the topic. Click on each objective to gain ideas.
  • Review “Logic Models” in the McKenzie et al. text pp. 321-322 and the sample Logic Model in Box 12.2 on p. 323.

The Assignment (2–3 pages)

  • Create a mission statement for your public health program.
  • Describe two goals of your public health program and explain why you selected these goals.
  • Describe two short-term and two long-term (SMART) objectives for your public health program and explain why you selected these objectives.
  • Describe two strategies you might use to meet your goals and objectives.
  • Create a logic model demonstrating the alignment between your mission statement, goals, objectives, and strategies for meeting those objectives. Use the examples from the textbook to guide you.

Your written Assignments must follow APA guidelines. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources and additional scholarly sources as appropriate.

Team management 10

Human interactions at work are changing all the time. The introduction and adoption of new technology has resulted in tremendous disruption of all aspects of our society especially in the workplace.  Events such as natural disasters and political upheaval are also a source of disruption. The events of the Covid-19 pandemic and related economic impact are prime examples of these changes.

It is important for managers and leaders to keep abreast of current events, the real and potential disruptors of tomorrow. This assignment is intended to help the student engage actively with a wide variety of information sources and bring focus of the topics covered in class to bear on real world events.

Please submit 1 article per week from a legitimate news outlet, industry periodical, academic journal or other source that explores the topics of managing people and technology as a current event. Prepare a short synopsis of the article and discuss your interpretation of the events, conflicts, subjects or ideas described.

The topic is very wide.  I expect a concise summary of the pertinent details and your analysis, opinion or interpretation of the article.

Your review should be about 800 words long, approximately the length of this description.

Please include the article with your submission.

Discussion: Ethics in Practice week 5

Discussion: Ethics in Practice

Instructions: Develop a position: should individual rights be compromised to control the spread of communicable diseases for the good of society? What is the role of boards of health in your community and state in preventing and controlling communicable diseases? Minimum 250 words.

 Ethics In Practice

Tension between Individual and Societal Rights

Gail A. DeLuca Havens, PhD, RNCodes of ethics can be thought of as moral codes. Moral commitments “to adhere to the ideals and moral norms of the profession,” such as maintaining competency in practice, are expressed in the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses (2001, p. 5) and are made by individuals when they become nurses. The fundamental concept underlying the Code of Ethics for Nurses is respect for persons. Certain principles growing out of this concept guide nurses’ decision making. These include fostering self-determination, doing good, avoiding harm, being truthful, respecting privileged information, keeping promises, and treating people fairly. In their moral decision-making hierarchy, Beauchamp and Childress (2001) refer to principles and rules as action guides. Principles are the more global and basic conceptions that justify the rules. When ethical principles are being considered, it is important to remember that individuals are interdependent members of a community. The nurse will encounter situations in which the tension between individual liberty and the need to preserve the health and well-being of the community creates an ethical dilemma in practice. For instance, the nurse promises, as expressed by the principle of fidelity in the ANA Code, to maintain client confidentiality. However, such a promise is not absolute when innocent parties are in direct jeopardy (e.g., threatened with being killed) (ANA, 2001). This particular kind of dilemma is made even more troublesome for the nurse who is attempting to deal with two opposing or contradictory promises. For example, the implicit promise of the nurse to maintain client confidentiality, as expressed in the ANA Code, may contradict the nurse’s obligation to obey a law that requires reporting a particular situation (ANA, 2001). The nurse also has an ethical responsibility to respect the client and promote self-determination. Consider the following situation.Kay is a community health nurse who has been employed by a home health agency for more than 10 years. Several of her clients live in a homeless shelter and have been referred to her agency for follow-up tuberculosis treatment after hospital discharge. Today she is making her first visit to Paolo, a 33-year-old Hispanic man discharged after treatment in the hospital for acute, infectious tuberculosis. Kay explains that her agency, along with the city’s health department, helps persons with tuberculosis continue to take their medication as prescribed until they are cured. Kay asks Paolo how he is feeling this morning. He replies that he is tired; he did not sleep well this first night in a place not familiar to him. After she completes Paolo’s admission history and physical examination, Kay tells him that she, or a nurse substituting for her, will be visiting Paolo daily for 2 weeks to observe him taking his medication and then twice weekly for at least 6 months. Paolo protests that he is not a child and that he can be depended on to take his medication as prescribed. Kay explains that the current standard of care is that everyone in the community being treated for tuberculosis receive directly observed medication therapy. It will help him remember to continue to take medication as prescribed, particularly when he begins to feel better. Stopping the medication makes the treatment he received in the hospital ineffective. When medication is stopped, often the tuberculosis becomes infectious again. In addition, not completing treatment increases the likelihood that he will develop a type of tuberculosis that is resistant to medication therapy (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2003a). He could be very ill again. The city has an obligation to protect its residents from becoming infected with tuberculosis. Kay tells Paolo that she will be communicating with health department personnel because they are the ones who referred him to her.Paolo agrees, reluctantly, to cooperate in therapy. He asks how long it will take to be cured. Kay knows that the response to therapy varies, but most persons can be cured within 9 months (CDC, 2003b). Kay explains that 6 months of medication has been prescribed to cure his tuberculosis. Before Kay leaves, Paolo takes his first dose of medication, and they establish a schedule for his observed daily self-administration. Paolo’s treatment continues as planned over the next several months. He gains strength and eventually finds a job. Returning to work requires that his medication regimen be modified. Paolo has no trouble adapting it to his more demanding schedule. Several weeks pass with this new arrangement until, one evening, Paolo does not appear. Kay leaves a message for him to call her, but does not hear from him. When Paolo fails to appear again the following evening, Kay returns to the shelter. Eventually, Kay learns that Paolo has not been complying with his prescribed medication regimen. He does not deny it and tells Kay that because he has been taking medication for more than 3 months and feels better, he believes that he is cured of his tuberculosis and no longer needs therapy. How should Kay respond? Should she respect Paolo’s right to self-determination by not interfering with the decisions he has made? What if Paolo were to be harmed by this noninterference? What if others were to be harmed? Does Kay’s obligation to Paolo to maintain confidentiality remain even when his behavior might compromise the health and well-being of others? Under what circumstances might a nurse place the health and well-being of members of a community before those of an individual client? In this situation, because Paolo is an adult who is responsible for his own health, Kay could simply disregard the fact that Paolo has not been adhering to his prescribed medication regimen. However, she would not be helping Paolo to protect himself or others. Another strategy that Kay might employ would be to engage Paolo in problem solving to further explore his reasons for not complying with the medication regimen. Uncovering reasons for noncompliance often results in identifying ways to avoid it. One of the strategies recommended for directly observed therapy is for the nurse to adopt a nonjudgmental attitude toward clients, acknowledging that individuals often will not be 100% compliant with medication regimens. Kay could acknowledge that, because Paolo is feeling better, it is understandable that he is not taking his medication as prescribed. However, she also ought to remind him that he places himself at great risk for getting very sick again and developing drug-resistant tuberculosis by not following his medication regimen. This course of action might also be an opportunity to foster Paolo’s self-determination, to maintain the confidential nature of his care, and to strengthen the client-nurse relationship. However, adopting this strategy does jeopardize Paolo’s health and the health of the people with whom Paolo comes in contact. Kay does not know whether Paolo’s tuberculosis is infectious. Kay initiates tuberculosis screening for the people with whom Paolo has been in contact and creates an opportunity for Paolo to have his tuberculosis reevaluated. This action ought to diminish the potential for harm from active tuberculosis to Paolo and to others with whom he has been in contact. Because Kay’s authority has been delegated to her by the health department, she can communicate with the health department without legally violating confidentiality. Kay is aware that many states require quarantine of individuals who do not successfully complete a medication regimen for tuberculosis. To protect the public, a community health nurse can recommend that formal action be taken to ensure that a person complies with treatment. In this instance, quarantine means that individuals can be hospitalized or incarcerated for treatment of tuberculosis against their will.As a third strategy, Kay can follow the established protocol to initiate quarantine, reporting Paolo’s lack of compliance with medication therapy to the appropriate people. However, this breaches the confidential nature of the client–nurse relationship and compromises the trust and mutual respect that have been established between Paolo and Kay. The ANA Code (2001) alerts nurses to the reality of suspending individual rights but warns that this ought to “be considered a serious deviation from the standard of care” (p. 9). Usually a nurse does not select the third alternative until the second alternative has proven ineffective. How might Paolo be affected by this experience? How might Kay be affected by this experience? Which alternative would you choose?

Discussion 2 Response

Social loafing is where people tend to minimize their efforts and potential when working in groups than working individually (Singh et al., 2017). The idea of group works is perceived to improve the outcome of a given task through combined efforts. However, some individuals put minimal effort in achieving the overall group’s goal.

During my senior year in high school, the institution selected me as part of the ten-member team to undertake a task involving research on the major challenges faced by the students and recommend possible solutions to the same. I was placed into a group where most of the members were the class top performers. I did have an idea of a problem that the students were facing, so I could not air it out with the fear of being rejected by group members. Being the least performing group member, I was less confident and less motivated to participate in various activities. The rest of the group members did the work while I sat along, watching, and doing nothing to help the group.

Social loafers can be motivated to take part in activities of the group in various ways. Increasing personal responsibility by assigning distinct tasks to each member in a group is essential in ensuring that all members have a duty to meet the group’s goals (Zhu & Wang, 2018). Team leaders should recognize the contribution of all members of the group. For instance, providing team performance reviews and feedback strengthens member’s involvement and improves understanding (Karau & Wilhau, 2020). Increasing and promoting involvement in a group makes members feel appreciated and builds team loyalty, thus, increasing the participation of members.

GRADED DISCUSSION WEEK 7

Please note that if you edit your initial  response (Original Post), you will not get  credit for the Original  Post. The discussions are set up as “Must post first”.

In your initial response to the topic you have to answer all questions.

1)  For your first topic in this discussion I would like for you to briefly  review either your personal experiences and/or the financial literature  to identify and present a description of one actual capital  project/product success and the reasons attributed to the success.

Remember  this is a one to two paragraph exercise – do not go overboard – a few  hours research and summation is all that’s required. I am interested  only in your short, concise description of the project and the major  reasons you believe it was successful.

2) In your response please provide financial information  regarding the project (what is available): initial outlay, projected  cash flows, dollar profits.

3) Synthesize your one-paragraph position on what 3-5 specific  factors you believe most likely to contribute to capital project  analysis success.

4) Reflection – the students also should include a paragraph in the initial response  in their own words reflecting on specifically what they learned from  the assignment and how they think they could apply what they learned in  the workplace.

You are expected to make your own contribution in a main  topic as well as respond with value added comments to at least two of  your classmates as well as to your instructor.

Week 7 Discussion – I will be studying the Betsy Ross Interchange  project, which concerns rebuilding a stretch of (highway and local) road  near Philadelphia, to widen the highway from three lanes to four and  help mitigate traffic.

  1. The Betsy Ross interchange involved completely rebuilding a stretch  of a couple miles of highway near the Philadelphia metro area. The  intention was to widen the stretch of road from three lanes of highway  to four, and this entailed rebuilding many city streets as well. One  reason that this project has been regarded as a success is the level of  attention to detail in the original proposal. The steps were laid out  cleanly with timelines and clear budget estimates for each step of the  project. The project was implemented as a private-public partnership,  which can incorporate the advantages from government along with the  efficiency of the private sector. I was also very much impressed by a  list of potential risks and probabilities of the risk occurring. It is  important to document potential hangups and this project clearly  demonstrated an ability to see which things could go wrong, for example  utilities relocations.
  2. Since this is a government project rather than a closed loop in a  private corporation, the numbers take on a slightly different meaning.  We can look at money allocated compared to money spent and look at  whether the project is over or under budget. According to Table 4.1 on  p.30, a total of $113MM has been allocated for the project so far, and  only $53MM has been spent. The project is thus coming in ahead of  budget. Of course, the true benefit – less traffic congestion and  ideally less pollution – is more difficult to attach a dollar figure to.
  3. Synthesizing my response into specific factors: clear planning of  steps, listing out risks, public-private partnership, and high level of  detail.
  4. In this assignment, I learned a significant amount about project  management and tracking. I had thought that government projects had a  much more spurious budget in general. However, by examining this plan in  detail, I can see that there is a careful documentation of many  aspects: the money to be spent, the different phases of the project, and  the timeline for completion of the project. I will find this  extraordinarily helpful in the workplace as I work towards a management  position. A good manager will want to plan
  5. out projects and do a thorough analysis to maximize the chances that their projects will be successful.

Post by  Sabrina Mann

I’ve  spent the past couple of years working for a cybersecurity and risk  company and I have seen a lot of internal growth. When I started out at  this company it was only 10 of us in an office, and now we have 100’s of  people working globally. This growth was only possible due to various  capital projects, which has allowed the company to reinvest into itself  and grow. The organization has slightly shifted its focus, moving from  cybersecurity DFIR work to focusing more on risk management, ransomware  recovery, and business continuity. As operations have become more  focused, capital can be reinvested back into those functions to make  them more sustainable and scalable. As a result, many capital projects  are being oriented to expanding operations and ensuring the availability  of services.

Most recently, [my employer] made a $1M investment in an Enterprise  Resource Planning (ERP) system to drive HR and Finance efficiencies and  enhance scalability. This investment has also provided business insights  to enable effective decision-making and planning. Three key factors to  the success were:

  1. Planning
    1. Establishing and stress-testing an objective and realistic business case that provides a positive Return on Investment.
    2. Ensuring that investment aligned to the business goals.
  2. Risk Analysis
    1. Identify risks early on during the project, provide risk visibility  to leadership and project stakeholders, continuously monitor risks, and  take steps to mitigate.
  3. Resourcing
    1. Ensuring that the right people were in the right role early on during the project was critical.
    2. Establishing a diverse team with different points of view led to project delivery on time.
    3. Resource gaps were identified early and filled with highly skilled contractors.

This discussion project was a great opportunity for me to talk more  about my work on an executive level. I am most certainly one of the  least qualified people among my peers, as I’m the only one still in  college, so anytime that I have a topic I can discuss it is very  exciting. Additionally, having the opportunity to understand the  business better provides me a great opportunity. This past week I’ve  spent time discussing with the CFO, who gladly help me understand more  about the company. I had heard about some investments into HR and even  met a very talented new HR woman. Even so, I wouldn’t have thought it  would be $1 million! I’m excited to see what else comes out of this  investment.
