Why do we overeat?

Introduction:

Rates of childhood obesity have tripled in the last 2 decades (Weir, 2012). The APA has a growing body of literature reflecting this concern regarding childhood obesity.  We know that eating is not motivated by physical hunger alone.  For example, have you ever eaten when you were already full?  For this assignment you will explore some of the factors that contribute to overeating.

This assignment fulfills/Supports:

  • Module Outcome: 1
  • Course Outcome: 1, 3
  • General Education Competencies: 1, 2, 5

The Assignment:

For this Discussion Board, complete the following steps:

Step 1:

  1. Review the following resources:
    1. America’s Food and Health Watchdog website: https://cspinet.org/ (opens in a new window)
    2. American Psychological Association’s website: https://www.apa.org/monitor/2012/12/cover-obesity (opens in a new window).

Step 2:

You will not write a standard “initial post” for this DB.  Instead,  you will design and post a flyer that addresses the following:

  1. Suppose that you are a psychologist who studies motivation.  You are working with a nutritionist whose goal it is to design an informational flyer appropriate for a middle school lunchroom.  Your common goal is to motivate children to make healthier food choices.  Design a flyer (you will not write an essay for this assignment) that includes information from psychological theories or literature to encourage middle school children to eat healthier.  Be specific.  You must cite a source from your textbook and at least 2 other academic sources (a separate Reference Page should be submitted with your flyer). Creativity is encouraged!
  2. Examples of informational lunchroom flyers are attached below for reference.  Remember- YOUR flyer must include information from psychological theories or literature!

Citing Sources:   You must use APA style to reference your source(s) at the end of your submission.  For this assignment, you must include reference information for your textbook, the podcast and the article.  Information on how to format reference information (including a reference generator) in APA style can be found on the Purdue Online Writing Lab website at https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html (opens in a new window).
